BOONE - Under beautiful skies, a substantial crowd gathered to honor those who died in service to their country during the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the G.A.R. plot at the Linnwood Park Cemetery in Boone.  Presented by the Boone Veterans Council and the Boy Scouts of Boone, the laying of the wreaths were done by the American Legion Auxiliary, the DAR, the GAR and the VFW Auxiliary.Robbie Lambert read General Logan's orders and Colonel Mark Newhall gave the address.  Colonel Newhall served as the executive officer for the 2/34th Infantry Brigade Combat Team during deployment to Afghanistan in 2010 and 2011.  He currently serves as the G4, or Logistics Officer, for the Iowa Army National Guard

(AP) BOONE - The wife of an Ogden man, who was fatally shot by authorities during a May 2010 standoff has filed a lawsuit against officers, claiming they used excessive force and were negligent.  The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in Federal Court and says authorities violated Randall Kimsey's rights when they entered him home, sparking the fatal shooting. The filing says officers investigating reports of harassing phone calls to a neighbor went to Kimsey's home and asked to speak with him.  Kimsey came to the door armed with a handgun, then turned his back to officers and retreated into his house.  A standoff ensued and, the lawsuit says, Kimsey was shot after six officers entered the home and fired 33 times

BOONE -Absentee voting deadlines for the Primary Election to be conducted on June 5th are as follows:  Requests sent by mail must be received on or before June 1st.  In-person absentee voting is June 4th.  Absentee ballots can be obtained on the Iowa Secretary of State's website www.sos.state.ia.us.  Those wishing to vote an absentee ballot in-person can go to the Auditor's office located on the 2nd floor of the courthouse from 8 to 4:30, Mondays through Friday.  The Auditor's office will be open with special hours on Saturday, June 2nd.
